HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born
3on January 15, 1929; Dr. King dedicated his life to the pursuit
4of equality for all, regardless of race, creed, or origin; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Martin Luther King Jr. changed our nation forever
6through his leadership, service, and vision; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Through his determination and spirit, Martin
8Luther King Jr. led one of the greatest movements for equality
9and freedom in history; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. King's movement still continues to this day;
11he advocated non-violent means to overcome the evil of racism
12in our society and broke down barriers within our society by
13encouraging Americans to look past their differences; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The citizens of this great nation are challenged
15to demonstrate a commitment toward ending prejudice in the
16United States and bring to fruition Dr. King's dream of making
17America a better place for all; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Steering
19Committee, a subcommittee of the Decatur Human Relations
20Commission, is hosting the 25th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin

1Luther King, Jr. Banquet on January 15, 2011; the theme is
2"Where Do You Stand?"; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5recognize the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther
6King Jr. and urge the people of the State of Illinois and the
7nation at large to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the
8third Monday of January each year.
