HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
4Washington Dunbar Burney; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was born on April 14,
61916; his parents were John Calvin Burney and Elvina Moody
7Burney of Eastman, Georgia; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was a dedicated member of
9the Trustee Board and Men's Fellowship at Park Manor United
10Church of Christ for almost 50 years; he and family were well
11known for never missing church; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was a community leader
13from the beginning of his life; he was the first black member
14of Teamsters Union Local 744 in 1938 and the first black driver
15salesman for Budweiser in 1951; he served as president and
16co-founder of the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council for
17many years, helping Chatham to become a community of
18excellence; he was involved in numerous elections; he also
19pioneered the breakdown of racial barriers in area golf
20courses; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney enjoyed and excelled in

1the sport of golf; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney was the loving and
3devoted husband of Lillie Rose; he was also married to Vivian
4McEwen Jones for over 40 years; the brother of Flossie,
5Rosella, and Trelle; the father of Diedre-Rkhty Jones (Wayne),
6Marcia Aldington (Thomas), and Washington Dunbar Burney Jr. and
7father figure of Wanda Reason (David); the loving grandfather
8of Marcia-Amunet Wimby, Yoko Wimby, Stacy Carter (Winston),
9Kyle Arrington, Khami-Ra Jones, Jennifer Avery and Anthony
10(Tony) Gant; and the great-grandfather of Neferteri Amun,
11Nunera Amun, Jordan Wimby, Sydney Arlington, Autumn Gant, and
12Anthony Gant Jr.; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Washington Dunbar Burney will be remembered
14fondly by all who knew and loved him for his warm personality,
15easy-going smile, and great charisma; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
19Washington Dunbar Burney; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Washington Dunbar Burney as an
22expression of our sympathy.
