HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Alfred E.
4Gallo, who passed away on August 16, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo began attending the John Marshall Law
6School in 1940; his studies were interrupted, however, by the
7onset of World War II; shortly after, he volunteered for the
8Counterintelligence Corps of the United States Army and was
9stationed in Africa and Italy; and
 
10    WHEREAS, After World War II, Alfred Gallo returned to John
11Marshall Law School; while in law school, he worked as a
12clerk/typist at Liberty National Bank, where he was promoted to
13assistant trust officer in 1948; in 1955, as the result of a
14merger with Chicago National Bank, he became one of two
15supervisors responsible for the trust department at LaSalle
16Street Bank; in 1958, he became vice president and trust
17officer of Cosmopolitan National Bank of Chicago, rising to the
18position of president in 1971; in 1975, he became chief
19operating officer and chairman of the board of United of
20America Bank and O'Hare International Bank, which merged with
21Northern Trust Bank; he was responsible for forming the Land
22Trust Council of Illinois, which has a membership of over 100
23banks; he served as president of the trust division of the

1Illinois Bankers Association; he was also appointed to serve as
2director of a satellite bank of the holding company of the
3Northern Trust; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo had a long and distinguished career
5as a lawyer, serving for many years in private practice; in
61960, he became president of the Justinian Society of Lawyers;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo was well known throughout his
9community for his career involvement in the John Marshall Law
10School; devoting himself greatly to the John Marshall goal of
11giving as many people as possible the opportunity to become a
12lawyer, he served on the school's governing board for more than
1330 years and was elected president of its prestigious board of
14trustees in 2001; he served in that capacity until 2007; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The child of Italian immigrants, Alfred Gallo
16consistently demonstrated his commitment to the preservation
17of Sicilian and Italian culture; he was a driving force in the
18creation of the Sicilian American Cultural Association and
19served as the association's chairman; he was also the recipient
20of the Star of Solidarity from the Republic of Italy for his
21efforts in fostering artistic and cultural relations between
22Italy and the United States; and

1    WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo aided in the creation of an
2Ecclesiastical Foundation with the guidance of Albert Cardinal
3Meyers and Monsignor Francis Dolan for the perpetuation of the
4Queen of All Saints Basilica, the first of its kind in the
5Catholic Church; he was also a former member of the board of
6directors of the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association and
7a former member of the board of trustees of the Illinois
8College of Pediatric Medicine; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Alfred Gallo and his loving wife, Gina, lived on
10Chicago's North Side, where he was active in many community
11affairs and was a lector and ecumenical minister at St. William
12Church; he was also a devotee and lecturer on the life and art
13of Michelangelo and founder of the elite Oenophilists' Society
14of Chicago; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Alfred
18E. Gallo; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Alfred Gallo as an expression of our
21sympathy.
