HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of John
4 Schmidt of Antioch, who passed away on May 30, 2010; and
 
5     WHEREAS, John Schmidt was born on June 29, 1922, in Munich,
6 Germany; he immigrated to the U.S. with his parents, John and
7 Magdalena Schmidt, in 1923 and settled in Waukegan; he grew up
8 in Waukegan during its heyday and met his future wife, Irene,
9 in the German Club at Waukegan Township High School; he and his
10 wife later resided in Waukegan for over 50 years before moving
11 to Antioch in 1995 with their 4 dogs; and
 
12     WHEREAS, John Schmidt served his country with pride and
13 distinction as a member of the United States Army during World
14 War II; he served as a combat engineer with the 3rd Armored
15 Division, where he fought in most of the major campaigns in the
16 European theatre; and
 
17     WHEREAS, John Schmidt trained as a machinist at U.S. Steel;
18 after World War II, he took a job at Northwestern University in
19 1946; he retired from NU's Technological Institute after 42
20 years of running the Civil Engineering Lab, where he assisted
21 and mentored engineering grad students and specialized in model
22 making, stress analysis, and high speed photography; and

1     WHEREAS, John Schmidt loved spending time with his family
2 and the "old gang" from Northwestern University, reading
3 mystery novels, and working in his machine shop on many special
4 projects; he was well known for his ability to fix, redesign,
5 or refashion anything; and
 
6     WHEREAS, John Schmidt was preceded in death by his loving
7 wife of 63 years, Irene; and
 
8     WHEREAS, John Schmidt is survived by his children; Robert
9 (Suzi) Schmidt, Carol (Norman) Koshkarian, and Paula (Michael)
10 Bessler; his grandchildren, Mark Schmidt and Dawn (Brian)
11 Holcomb; and his great-grandson, Carson Holcomb; therefore, be
12 it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
15 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of John
16 Schmidt; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of John Schmidt as an expression of our
19 sympathy.
