HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of
4 Clinton as they celebrate the 175th anniversary of their
5 community; and
 
6     WHEREAS, In 1834, two men from McLean County were returning
7 to their homes after doing business in Decatur when they
8 stopped to rest; Jesse Fell, a Bloomington lawyer and land
9 speculator, and State Representative James Allen rested on a
10 mound of land that today is in the 400 block of North Center
11 Street in Clinton; and
 
12     WHEREAS, James Allen was an admirer of DeWitt Clinton, then
13 governor of New York and the mind behind the building of the
14 Erie Canal; the two men decided to form a community on the spot
15 and to call it Clinton and to name the county DeWitt; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Clinton was platted in 1835; throughout the years
17 the community grew, and in 1853 the Illinois Central Railroad
18 laid track through the community and brought in new families
19 and business opportunities; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Land was donated for Weldon Springs State Park
21 between 1850 and 1860; the Revere Corporation, Wallace Business

1 Forms, Todd Manufacturers, and many other businesses formed the
2 Industrial Park, expanding the community; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The Clinton Nuclear Power Plant was built in the
4 1980s, adding Clinton Lake as a recreational area; today the
5 community has a radio station, the YMCA, a library, movie
6 theaters, parks, a hospital, a golf course, and a country club;
7 the Apple and Pork Festival is held annually, drawing visitors
8 to the community; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 congratulate the citizens of Clinton on this historic event and
12 wish them continued growth and prosperity for years to come;
13 and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to Clinton Mayor Ed Wollet as a symbol of our respect
16 and esteem.
