HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig,
3 located approximately 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana,
4 exploded and later sank in the Gulf of Mexico; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Deepwater Horizon oil rig is owned by
6 Transocean Ltd. and leased by BP PLC; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The accident killed 11 workers and generated an
8 oil spill that is now endangering wildlife and businesses along
9 the Gulf Coast; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Every day, thousands of gallons of oil continue to
11 leak into the Gulf of Mexico as a result of this disaster; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Efforts are ongoing to curtail and contain the
13 flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico; and
 
14     WHEREAS, The oil slick that is being created by this
15 accident is becoming one of the worst man-made environmental
16 disasters in recent memory; and
 
17     WHEREAS, The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will likely
18 have long-term economic and environmental effects; and

1     WHEREAS, This disaster reaffirms the need for a safe,
2 diverse, reliable, and renewable energy supply, of which
3 biofuels play a very important role and will help reduce our
4 dependence on foreign oil; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Expanded production of biofuels would generate
6 domestic economic development and create employment
7 opportunities; and
 
8     WHEREAS, The production of biofuels pose fewer
9 environmental threats than drilling for oil; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 urge the continued growth and development of biofuels to help
13 reduce our dependence on oil and help avert future
14 environmental disasters caused by oil production; and be it
15 further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented the Governor of Illinois, each member of the Illinois
18 congressional delegation, the Illinois Farm Bureau, the
19 Illinois Corn Growers Association, and the Illinois Soybean
20 Association.
