HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Eric Jakobsson
4 on his retirement from the University of Illinois at
5 Urbana-Champaign; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Dr. Eric Jakobsson served the University of
7 Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in exemplary fashion for 39 years
8 in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology; the
9 National Center for Supercomputing Applications;
10 Bioengineering; the Center for Biophysics and Computational
11 Biology; the Department of Biochemisty; the Neuroscience
12 Program; and the Beckman Institute as a researcher, teacher,
13 and administrator; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Dr. Jakobsson received his B.A from Columbia
15 College, his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Columbia
16 University School of Engineering, and his Ph.D. in physics from
17 Dartmouth College; in addition, he received postdoctoral
18 training at Case Western Reserve University in physiology; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Dr. Jakobsson has made major contributions
20 nationally in research administration in computational biology
21 as the first Director of the Center for Bioinformatics and
22 Computational Biology at the National Institute of General

1 Medical Sciences in the National Institutes of Health, which
2 supported research that joins biology with computer science,
3 engineering, mathematics, and physics; in that capacity he
4 chaired the National Institutes of Health Biomedical
5 Information Science and Technology Initiative Consortium and
6 participated broadly in planning related to computational
7 biology; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Dr. Jakobsson has been an outstanding teacher and
9 mentor, receiving the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
10 Advising Award, being named to the Incomplete List of Excellent
11 Teachers, and being nominated for the College of Liberal Arts
12 and Sciences Teaching Award; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Dr. Jakobsson is an exceptional scientist who is
14 studying the biology of ion channels, which among other things
15 underlie all nervous activity and the transport of ions across
16 membranes, by state-of-the-art computational and bioinformatic
17 approaches; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Dr. Jakobsson has lectured nationally and
19 internationally on his research; he has received continuous
20 funding for his research from the National Science Foundation
21 and the National Institutes of Health; he has served on many
22 national review panels, and has published his work in more than
23 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts; and

1     WHEREAS, Dr. Jakobsson was elected as a Fellow of the
2 American Physical Society; Dr. Jakobsson has been active in
3 administrative functions at the University of Illinois,
4 serving as Director of the Bioengineering Program, Director of
5 the Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, and
6 Director of the National Center for Design of Biomimetic
7 Nanoconductors; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Dr. Jakobsson is married to Illinois State
9 Representative Naomi Jokobsson; together, they are the proud
10 parents of eight children, two by birth and six by adoption;
11 they have also been foster parents to many children; in
12 addition, they are the doting grandparents of eleven
13 grandchildren who will happily be a part of Dr. Jakobsson's
14 retirement plans; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17 congratulate Dr. Eric Jakobsson on his retirement, thank him
18 for his years of service, and wish him the best in all his
19 future endeavors; and be it further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to Dr. Eric Jakobsson as a symbol of our respect and
22 esteem.
