HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor accomplishments in the
4 lives of citizens of the State of Illinois; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Achy Obejas, a distinguished and
6 critically-acclaimed author, journalist, and translator, has
7 won the Civic Engagement, Community Service and Community
8 Organizing Award from the University of Illinois at Chicago's
9 Gender and Women's Studies Program; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Achy Obejas, a staff writer for the Chicago
11 Tribune, won a Pulitzer Prize for a Tribune team investigation;
12 and
 
13     WHEREAS, Throughout her career as a journalist, Achy Obejas
14 has received many awards, including the Studs Terkel Journalism
15 Prize and several Peter Lisagor journalism honors; and
 
16     WHEREAS, As the author of Ruins, Days of Awe, Aguas & Otros
17 Cuentos, and several other books, Achy Obejas has been awarded
18 2 Lambda Literary awards, a national Endowment for the Arts
19 fellowship in poetry, and residencies at Yaddo, Ragdale, and
20 the Virginia Center for the Arts; and

1     WHEREAS, Achy Obejas has translated Havana Noir into
2 English and Junot Diaz's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Brief
3 Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao into Spanish; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Achy Obejas has traveled extensively in various
5 capacities, lecturing and reading her work in the United
6 States, Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and Australia and
7 serving as the Springer Writer-in-Residence at the University
8 of Chicago and the Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at the
9 University of Hawaii; she currently serves as the Sor Juana
10 Writer-in-Residence at DePaul University in Chicago;
11 therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14 congratulate Achy Obejas for winning the Civic Engagement,
15 Community Service and Community Organizing Award from the
16 University of Illinois at Chicago's Gender and Women's Studies
17 Program and wish her continued success in the future; and be it
18 further
 
19     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20 presented to Achy Obejas and the University of Illinois at
21 Chicago's Gender and Women's Studies Program as a symbol of our
22 affection, gratitude, and respect.
