HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Boy Scouts of
4 America on the occasion of the organization's 100th
5 anniversary; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on
7 February 8, 1910, under the laws of the District of Columbia;
8 initial meetings brought together 34 national representatives
9 of boys' work agencies; the Founders of Scouting included
10 former presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft;
11 and
 
12     WHEREAS, The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to
13 prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over
14 their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout
15 Oath and Law; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Since its founding, the Boy Scouts of America has
17 helped build the future leaders of this country by combining
18 educational activities and lifelong values with fun; the
19 organization believes that helping youth is a key to building a
20 more conscientious, responsible, and productive society; and
 
21     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America boasts over half of all

1 active U.S. astronauts, one-third of all active military, and
2 over 200 members of the 111th Congress as Scouting alumni or
3 volunteers; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America played a critical role
5 in the U.S. domestic war effort during the two world wars,
6 selling millions of war bonds, aiding in food and fuel
7 conservation projects, conducting defense housing surveys, and
8 assisting emergency medical units; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has developed an
10 outstanding record of service, reporting over 35 million
11 service hours in 2008 in the areas of food collection and
12 distribution, litter cleanup and community beautification,
13 conservation projects, food service at shelters, and military
14 support and appreciation; and
 
15     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America serves nearly 4.7
16 million young people between 7 and 20 years of age with more
17 than 300 councils throughout the United States and its
18 territories; and
 
19     WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America has benefited from
20 millions of volunteers who have provided leadership for
21 Scouting programs over the last 100 years; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3 congratulate the past, present, and future members of the Boy
4 Scouts of America on the occasion of the organization's 100th
5 anniversary celebration as one of the nation's foremost youth
6 programs for character development and values-based leadership
7 training; and be it further
 
8     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9 presented to the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of
10 America as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
