HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Approximately 15 million residents in the United
3 States have their identities stolen each year; the costs
4 associated with these thefts are approximately $50 billion; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The average individual loss from an identity theft
6 case is around $3,500; the average amount of time a person
7 spends recovering from the consequences of identity theft is
8 approximately 25 hours; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Among the many different types of identity theft,
10 the most common form is financial identity theft, which can
11 lead to serious consequences, including damaged credit, credit
12 and debit card fraud, checking and savings account fraud,
13 investment account fraud, mortgage and other loan fraud, and
14 tax fraud; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Recovering losses from identity theft is very
16 difficult, particularly for low-income families that are
17 already struggling with their finances; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Many people are unaware of the need to protect
19 themselves from identity thieves; therefore, be it

1 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
2 designate the month of December 2010 as Identity Theft
3 Awareness Month in the State of Illinois in order to raise
4 awareness of identity theft and its effects on Illinois
5 citizens and their families.
