HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death
3 in both men and women in the United States; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Former smokers and people who have never smoked
5 comprise the majority of new cases of lung cancer each year;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, 70% of new lung cancer cases will be diagnosed at
8 a late stage, with a 15% 5-year survival rate; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Early lung cancer diagnosis and management
10 protocols currently exist, but have not been embraced
11 nation-wide as the standard of care; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Funding for lung cancer research falls far short
13 of that for other, less fatal diseases; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 designate November of 2010 as "Illinois Lung Cancer Awareness
17 Month" in the State of Illinois in order to raise awareness of
18 lung cancer and its effects on Illinois residents and their
19 families; and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That we urge the citizens of this State to help
2 make lung cancer a national public health priority and offer
3 compassion to people with lung cancer.
