HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On December 5, 2009, legendary radio personality
3 Herbert Rogers "The Cool Gent" Kent will be inducted into the
4 Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest career by
5 a deejay in the history of radio; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Herb Kent's career in radio began in 1944 at WBEZ
7 while he was a 16-year-old student at Hyde Park High School;
8 his career has spanned 65 years at 11 different radio stations
9 in the Chicagoland area, including 17 years at WVON and 20
10 years at WVAZ; and
 
11     WHEREAS, In 1995, Herb Kent was the first African-American
12 deejay inducted into the Museum of Broadcast Communications'
13 Radio Hall of Fame; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Herb Kent still hosts the top-rated music shows in
15 Chicago on Saturdays from 8:00 A.M. to noon and on Sundays from
16 noon to 7:00 P.M. on WVAZ/V-103 Radio; and
 
17     WHEREAS, For the past 5 years, Herb Kent has taught radio
18 broadcasting to students at Chicago State University; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Herb Kent has chronicled his amazing life and
20 career in his best selling autobiography titled "The Cool Gent:

1 The Nine Lives of Radio Legend Herb Kent", with co-author David
2 Smallwood and a foreword by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Real Men Cook Charities will honor Herb Kent with
4 a 65th Radio Anniversary Celebration on December 5, 2009 at the
5 South Shore Cultural Center, where Guinness representatives
6 will present him with his World Record; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9 congratulate Herbert Rogers "The Cool Gent" Kent on the
10 occasion of being inducted into the Guinness Book of World
11 Records and wish him continued success and happiness in the
12 future; and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to Herb Kent as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
