HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representative seeks to
3 recognize the national achievements of Illinois residents for
4 their commitment to the preservation of our environment and
5 natural resources; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Joyce Blumenshine of Peoria is the recipient of
7 the 2009 Sierra Club Special Service Award for her three
8 decades of conservation efforts in Illinois; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Joyce Blumenshine chairs the Mines Committee and
10 the Conservation Committee of the Illinois Chapter of the
11 Sierra Club, where she has been a leader in stopping pollution
12 of rivers, streams, and wetlands from coal mine runoff and has
13 worked to prevent the destruction of wetlands and rivers; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Joyce Blumenshine has worked to protect the
15 streams and wetlands of the Shoal Creek watershed, the Coffeen
16 Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area, streams and wetlands in the
17 Middle Fork Big Muddy River watershed, and streams tributary to
18 the Kaskaskia River State Fish & Wildlife Areas; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Joyce Blumenshine worked to protect more than 600
20 acres of land between the Banner Marsh State Fish and Wildlife
21 Area and the Rice Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area, which are

1 both listed as Globally Important Migrating Bird Habitats; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Joyce Blumenshine has also been active in opposing
3 the expansion of a hazardous waste landfill in Peoria County
4 and the proposal to send electric arc furnace dust to a
5 landfill in Tazewell County that lies over a major aquifer;
6 therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9 recognize the efforts of Joyce Blumenshine to protect and
10 preserve Illinois' environment by receiving the 2009 Sierra
11 Club Special Service Award; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to Joyce Blumenshine as a symbol of our esteem and
14 respect.
