HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Reverend Dr.
4 Willie Ray Davis and the congregation of Progressive Missionary
5 Baptist Church in Chicago on the 90th anniversary of the
6 church; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The Progressive Missionary Baptist Church was
8 organized in the home of Brother and Sister Brumfield in
9 October of 1918; the first pastor was Reverend Charles Brooks,
10 Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Upon Reverend Brooks leaving to return to
12 Louisiana, Reverend Thomas Emerson Brown was called to serve as
13 the new pastor and accepted the call in April of 1919; and
 
14     WHEREAS, In 1920 the church became a member of the
15 Bethlehem District Association; the Sunday School Department
16 was also organized in 1920 and today consists of nine
17 departments and numerous classes; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Usher Board was organized in 1925 and the
19 Youth Usher Board in 1932; the Senior Choir was organized in
20 1920 and the Junior Choir in 1931; the Gospel Chorus and the
21 Male Chorus were organized in 1932; the Young People's Choir

1 and Here Am I Chorale and Glee Chorus were added to the church
2 in 1964; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Other pastors to serve the church include Reverend
4 H.G. Robinson, Reverend Retha B. Brown, Reverend Dr.
5 Christopher Alan Bullock, and current pastor Reverend Dr.
6 Willie Ray Davis; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9 congratulate the people of Progressive Missionary Baptist
10 Church on this momentous occasion and wish them the best in the
11 future as they continue to reach the people of Chicago; and be
12 it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to Reverend Dr. Willie Ray Davis and the congregation
15 of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church as a symbol of our
16 sincere respect.
