HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Steven
4 "Steve" Frederick Sell of Mattoon, who passed away on May 13,
5 2009; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Steve Sell was born October 19, 1946 in Mattoon,
7 the son of Frederick John "Fred" Sell and Eleanor Janet Sell;
8 Steve was dedicated to teaching hundreds of Scouts the meaning
9 of the 12 tenets of the Scout Oath: to be "Trustworthy, Loyal,
10 Helping, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful,
11 Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent"; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He headed Mattoon Boy Scout Troop 152 for 30 plus
13 years, declaring his mission in life was to have the best Boy
14 Scout troop in the Lincoln Trails Council; for over 51 years,
15 Steve was involved with scouting, joining the Scouts at the age
16 of 11; during his time as Scoutmaster of Troop 152, a total of
17 59 of his boys became Eagle Scout; and
 
18     WHEREAS, His genius was to bring out the best in his Boy
19 Scouts; to listen, to lead by example, to inspire, motivate,
20 give advice, and encourage; in addition to Scouting, Steve
21 dedicated much of his life in service to others; Steve offered
22 diligent leadership for boys throughout his life; he sponsored

1 two exchange students, Roma from Russia and Rick from Brazil;
2 Steve gave over 3,000 hours of service as a volunteer with
3 Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital Guild and served as a volunteer Pen
4 Pal for Mattoon Williams Elementary School; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Steve was retired as a supervisor for the Illinois
6 Department of Transportation; he was a lead member of the
7 statewide Illinois Department of Transportation Management
8 Training Cadre; he was a graduate of Mattoon High School and
9 attended Lake Land College and Eastern Illinois University; he
10 served as Lafayette Township Assessor and was a member of the
11 Trinity Lutheran Church, Lerna Masonic Lodge #788, Ansar
12 Shrine, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Steven Sell is survived by his sister, Susan
14 Perez; his three nieces, Sara De La Cruz, Lena Berrios, and
15 Laura Fowler; his nephew, Asa Gonzales; his 14 grand nieces and
16 nephews; and many close friends and relatives; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 mourn, along with his family, friends, and grateful young men
20 who he instructed in the Boy Scouts over the years, the passing
21 of Steven Sell; and be it further
 
22     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
