HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Renny Garshelis,
4 former wrestling official from Charleston, on being selected to
5 the Illinois Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame;
6 and
 
7     WHEREAS, The longtime official from Charleston has
8 previously been named to Halls of Fame for the Illinois
9 Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, Eastern Illinois
10 University athletics, and Charleston High School wrestling;
11 and
 
12     WHEREAS, He began officiating locally, eventually working
13 39 championships, including national college meets and State
14 high school events; he is the only official to have worked NCAA
15 Division I individual and team championships and IHSA
16 individual and team championships; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He began his career as the first wrestling coach
18 at Charleston High School; after the school dropped wrestling,
19 he began officiating high school meets in 1973 and then Eastern
20 Illinois University meets; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Mr. Garshelis' officiating career evolved into

1 working the Southern Open, the St. Louis Open, and Caesar's
2 Palace tournaments for 20 years each, the Organ Bowl for 15
3 years, the Oklahoma Open and the Iowa Open for five years, and
4 the NCAA West Regionals for 20 years; he officiated two NAIA
5 nationals and in 1979 worked all three NCAA levels of
6 Nationals, Divisions I, II, and III; and
 
7     WHEREAS, He officially retired in 2003, and spent a season
8 coaching Charleston High School; since that time he has helped
9 by observing high school officials and providing advice;
10 therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13 congratulate Renny Garshelis on this honor and wish him the
14 best in his future endeavors; and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to Renny Garshelis as a symbol of our respect.
