HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish
3 Republic, dedicated the date of April 23 to the children of his
4 country to emphasize that the children were the future of the
5 new nation; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Since 1935, Children's Day has been celebrated on
7 April 23 in Turkey so that the children would cherish the
8 independence and freedom obtained since the Turkish
9 Independence War in 1920; and
 
10     WHEREAS, On April 23 of every year, children from around
11 the world travel to Turkey and are hosted by Turkish families
12 to participate in "Sovereignty and Children's Day", where the
13 children create lifelong friendships, learn foreign traditions
14 and customs, and attend the Grand National Assembly, where
15 children pledge their commitment to international peace and
16 brotherhood; and
 
17     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois, in partnership with Consul
18 General Ugur Kenan Ipek of Turkey, recognizes the importance of
19 children as our future leaders and encourages the uniting of
20 all citizens to promote a safe and healthy environment for our
21 children; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3 designate April 23, 2009 as Children's Day in the State of
4 Illinois; and be it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That we encourage our communities to come
6 together to participate in giving faith, hope, love and
7 commitment to the children of this State and around the world.
