HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that
3 causes growths and tumors to form on nerves; neurofibromatosis
4 is one of the most common genetic disorders, approximately one
5 in every 3,000 babies born has neurofibromatosis;
6 neurofibromatosis occurs in both genders, and all ethnic groups
7 equally; and
 
8     WHEREAS, There are two types of neurofibromatosis: Type 1
9 is a form of neurofibromatosis that can be inherited from a
10 parent or be a spontaneous mutation and affects a gene on
11 chromosome 17; people with this type of neurofibromatosis
12 generally have brown oval or circular spots on the skin called
13 cafe-au-lait spots and freckles under the arm or in the groin
14 area; they also have benign soft tumors or lumps under the skin
15 called neurofibroma; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Neurofibromatosis Type 1 often causes learning
17 difficulties in children, and can also affect physical growth;
18 tumors may form along nerves anywhere in the body; and it can
19 cause atrophy, pseudarthrosis, scoliosis, plexiform
20 neurofibroma, bright spots on the brain, optic glioma,
21 depression, executive function issues, and other psychological
22 issues; and

1     WHEREAS, Neurofibromatosis Type 2 is also inherited or a
2 spontaneous mutation caused by a change in a gene on chromosome
3 22; neurofibromatosis Type 2 is sometimes referred to as
4 central neurofibromatosis or bilateral acoustic neuroma;
5 neurofibromatosis Type 2 affects nerves next to the brain or
6 spinal chord and can cause serious disabilities; and
 
7     WHEREAS, People with neurofibromatosis Type 2 have tumors
8 that affect hearing and balance, and they can have tumors that
9 push on the brain or spinal chord, as well as tumors along the
10 peripheral nerves; these problems can cause weakness and
11 seizures; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Neurofibromatosis Inc. Midwest is a network that
13 provides information on neurofibromatosis, makes referrals to
14 local medical resources, sponsors national and local
15 conferences for neurofibromatosis families, as well as other
16 services; their mission is to create a community of support for
17 individuals and families affected by neurofibromatosis; and
 
18     WHEREAS, May is National Neurofibromatosis Month; Great
19 Steps for Neurofibromatosis 2009 will take place at the
20 Naperville Riverwalk on Saturday, June 6, 2009 and in Effingham
21 on June 20, 2009; therefore, be it
 
22     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

1 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
2 proclaim May of 2009 as Neurofibromatosis Month in the State of
3 Illinois; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to Neurofibromatosis Inc. Midwest as a symbol of our
6 respect.
