HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Rev. Isaac
4 Singleton on the occasion of his retirement as pastor of Mount
5 Zion Baptist Church in Joliet; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Rev. Isaac Singleton has served as pastor of Mount
7 Zion Baptist Church since his original sermon on the first
8 Sunday of December 1961; under Rev. Singleton's stewardship,
9 Mount Zion Baptist Church has grown from 100 members to more
10 than 2,000 members; the church building has grown from a small
11 building with outdoor toilets when Rev. Singleton arrived to a
12 28,000 square foot church and adjoining Family Life Center on
13 Singleton Place, the street named after Rev. Singleton; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Rev. Isaac Singleton has preached on five
15 continents; he has traveled to Africa to help build churches
16 and has served as a Baptist minister in Europe, Asia, and South
17 America; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Prior to becoming a pastor and community leader,
19 Rev. Isaac Singleton farmed with his father, plowing fields,
20 breaking mules, and doing farm chores in rural Louisiana; he
21 served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II;
22 he was previously employed as a factory welder and had a brief

1 career as a vacuum cleaner salesman; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Rev. Isaac Singleton marched with Martin Luther
3 King in Montgomery, Alabama; he also shook hands with President
4 Ronald Reagan at the White House; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Rev. Isaac Singleton married his wife Pearlie on
6 September 12, 1947; together, they have six children, Gloria
7 Singleton Hayes, Isaac Singleton, Jr., Charles Edward
8 Singleton, Barbara Ann Singleton-Edwards, Valerie Jean
9 Singleton, and Willie D. Singleton; they also have 17
10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one
11 great-great-grandchild; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14 congratulate Rev. Isaac Singleton on the occasion of his
15 retirement and wish him many happy and healthy retirement
16 years; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to Rev. Isaac Singleton as a symbol of our esteem and
19 respect.
