SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
60 ILCS 1/45-55

    Amends the Township Code. Provides that in townships with a population of more than 10,000 (now, 15,000) located within counties with a population of 3,000,000 or less, the township central committee of a political party composed of the precinct committeemen may, with respect to any regular township election, determine that its candidates for township offices shall be nominated by primary in accordance with the general election law rather than by caucus. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Township Code is amended by changing Section
5 45-55 as follows:
 
6     (60 ILCS 1/45-55)
7     Sec. 45-55. Nomination by primary election. In (i) counties
8 having a population of more than 3,000,000, the township
9 central committee of a political party composed of the elected
10 township committeeman and his or her appointed precinct
11 committeemen and (ii) townships with a population of more than
12 10,000 15,000 in counties with a population of 3,000,000 or
13 less, the township central committee of a political party
14 composed of the precinct committeemen may, with respect to any
15 regular township election, determine that its candidates for
16 township offices shall be nominated by primary in accordance
17 with the general election law, rather than in the manner
18 provided in Sections 45-5 through 45-45. If the township
19 central committee makes that determination, it must file a
20 statement of the determination with the county clerk no later
21 than November 15 preceding the township election. If the
22 township or any part of the township is within the jurisdiction
23 of a board of election commissioners, the township central

1 committee shall promptly notify the board of election
2 commissioners of the determination. Upon the filing of the
3 determination by the township central committee of a political
4 party, the provisions of the general election law shall govern
5 the nomination of candidates of that political party for
6 township offices for the election with respect to which the
7 determination was made.
