SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of David Justice, who passed away on
4 September 10, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, David Justice was an internationally-respected
6 leader in the field of adult learning, who dedicated his career
7 to creating opportunities through lifelong learning; David
8 provided strong leadership to DePaul University, serving first
9 as a tenured associate professor and then dean of the School
10 for New Learning(SNL); and
 
11     WHEREAS, At DePaul, David planned and launched the
12 university's Division of Lifelong Learning and Suburban
13 Campuses; from 1995 to 2006, David served as DePaul's first
14 Vice President of Lifelong Learning, helping to shape this new
15 division through the incorporation of distance learning,
16 certificate programs, the English Language Academy, non-credit
17 educational programs, and conference services; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Prior to his work at DePaul, David was a senior
19 program officer at the Fund for the Improvement of
20 Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) at the U.S. Department of
21 Education; David was given the Via Sapientiae Award by DePaul
22 University in 2007, the highest academic award that DePaul

1 bestows, which recognizes both faculty and staff members who
2 have made distinctive and extraordinary contributions to the
3 university; David was also the recipient of the 2007 Morris T.
4 Keeton Adult and Experiential Learning Award, bestowed by the
5 Board of Trustees of CAEL (Council for Adult and Experiential
6 Learning); and
 
7     WHEREAS, He was an important part of CAEL's history as a
8 former Board member, trusted advisor, and consultant; in
9 addition, David served on the board of trustees of the Frank
10 Lloyd Wright Foundation in Oak Park and has been a board member
11 of the National Center on Adult Learning since 1989; and
 
12     WHEREAS, David Justice is survived by his wife, Pamela
13 Tate; his parents, John and Martha Justice; his children, Owen
14 and Kirsten Justice; his grandchildren, John and Marina Bundy;
15 and his brother, Courtney Justice; therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
17 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18 his family and friends, the passing of David Justice; and be it
19 further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the family of David Justice as a symbol of our
22 sincere sympathy.
