SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of John VonBergen of Alton, who passed away
4 on August 24, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born July 21, 1928, in rural Alton, where
6 he remained all his life; he was the son of Oscar and Ruth
7 (Cousins) VonBergen; he married Margie Higgins on November 24,
8 1949, at College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton and they
9 were married 54 years; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company for
11 30 years, retiring in 1976; he then began a new career
12 developing land and building custom homes with his wife
13 throughout the metro area for 22 years; and
 
14     WHEREAS, He enjoyed volunteering for the Alton Band and
15 Orchestra Builders and later served as president; he was one of
16 the founding trustees for both the Fosterburg Water District
17 and the Fosterburg Fire Protection District; he was involved
18 with the Madison County and Illinois Homebuilders Association,
19 holding many different offices in those organizations; he was
20 recently elected senior life director to the National
21 Association of Homebuilders in Washington D.C.; he was a member
22 of the Alton Eagles and the Telephone Pioneers; and he was

1 currently serving on the Alton Bell Credit Union Board of
2 Directors; and
 
3     WHEREAS, John VonBergen was preceded in death by his
4 parents, Oscar and Ruth VonBergen; by his wife, Margie; and by
5 two sisters, Lois (VonBergen) Sterling and Alvina (VonBergen)
6 O'Boyle; and
 
7     WHEREAS, He is survived by two daughters and their spouses,
8 Barb and John Jones and Ruth and John Phegley; his
9 grandchildren, Aaron Jones, Emily Jones Helling and her
10 husband, Corey, and Alec and Eric Phegley; and his two
11 brothers, Harold VonBergen and Ralph VonBergen; therefore, be
12 it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15 his family and friends, the passing of John VonBergen; and be
16 it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of John VonBergen as a symbol of our
19 sincere sympathy.
