SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Dr. David B. Calandra of Hinsdale, who
4 passed away on May 5, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born October 17, 1955; he graduated with a
6 bachelor's degree in chemistry from Carthage College in 1977
7 and received his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch
8 School of Medicine in 1980; he completed his residency in
9 pathology at the University of Chicago Hospital in 1981; and
10 after completing his residency in general surgery at Loyola in
11 1986, he became a fellow in thoracic and cardiovascular
12 surgery; and
 
13     WHEREAS, He was an active member of the Adventist Hinsdale
14 Hospital Department of Surgery since 1989; he taught at
15 Loyola's Strich School of Medicine from 1988 to 1996, working
16 his way from instructor to clinical assistant professor; he
17 joined the University of Chicago Hospitals as an associate
18 professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in 1998 and
19 worked there until March of 2003; and
 
20     WHEREAS, He was a participant in mission trips to Ecuador
21 and Africa with others from the Adventist hospital system, to
22 Ethiopia with Christ Church of Oak Brook, and to Lawndale with

1 Christian Health Center and Church; and
 
2     WHEREAS, He was a member of the American Board of Surgery
3 and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery; he served as a
4 committee member at Loyola, Good Samaritan, and Hinsdale
5 hospitals; he served as a Robert Crown Center for Health
6 Education board member from 1994 until his passing; he was also
7 the regional director of the Rooney Heart Institute from 1993
8 to 2002; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He enjoyed golf, traveling, and cooking; he
10 received many awards and recognition over the years; and he
11 loved to share his thoughts and knowledge with others; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Dr. Calandra was preceded in death by his parents,
13 Dr. Joseph C. and Patricia Calandra; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Dr. Calandra is survived by his wife of 25 years,
15 Marcia J., nee Huna; his children, Ashley, Nicole, Michelle,
16 and Patricia; his siblings, Joseph (Mary), Susan (Tom)
17 Sylvester, and Carolyn (Tom) Selsor; his father-in-law, Jack
18 Huna, and his mother-in-law, Mary Huna; and his many nieces and
19 nephews; therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with

1 his family and friends, the passing of Dr. David Calandra; and
2 be it further
 
3     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of Dr. David B. Calandra as a symbol of
5 our sincere sympathy.
