SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Catalina Garcia of Cicero, who passed
4 away on February 14, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia was born on January 15, 1988 at
6 Cook County Hospital in Chicago; her parents were Jacinto and
7 Consuelo Garcia; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia was raised in Cicero with her
9 three siblings, Myra, Jaime, and Joel; as a child, she held the
10 innate ability to lift the spirits of all those around her with
11 her warm, caring, and friendly personality, a trait she carried
12 with her all of her life; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia's good humor, outgoing
14 personality, lively imagination, and mellowed enthusiasm for
15 life led to having a very active childhood, taking part in
16 volleyball, dancing, and listening to music; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia graduated from J. Sterling Morton
18 East High School in 2006; she was well known in her school as
19 the class "cut-up", who enjoyed making others laugh; she
20 received many Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and Student of
21 the Month awards in honor of her school conduct; and

1     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia attended college at Northern
2 Illinois University, where she was viewed by many of her
3 classmates as being a creative, artistic, and jovial person who
4 loved to share her passion for fun with others; her favorite
5 course was English; her main interests were to enroll in the
6 College of Education and to begin a new position as an
7 undergraduate work-study employee at the NIU Center for Latino
8 and Latin American Studies, aspirations that tragically never
9 came to pass; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia's outgoing personality endeared
11 her to everyone she met, using her gregarious, adaptable, and
12 outgoing personality to garner many friends and acquaintances;
13 she was viewed by many as an "adaptable realist" who used her
14 common sense and trusting her experiences and impulses to
15 uncover the correct answer to any of life's problems; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia enjoyed creating and making
17 things, collecting stuffed animals, talking on the phone,
18 eating, and watching and playing sports, especially
19 volleyball; she also enjoyed traveling to new and different
20 places, including Barreras, Mexico, and Washington D.C.; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia was an animal lover who cherished
22 her pets, enjoying their company almost as much as she enjoyed

1 being with other people; one of her favorite pets was Chapulin,
2 a toy poodle she owned; and
 
3     WHEREAS, During her high school years, Catalina Garcia was
4 a member of the Dance Club (Audacity) and MEBE; during college,
5 she joined the Mujer a Mujer Mentoring Program and was an
6 active member of the Mentor/Mentee; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia was a member Our Lady of Mount
8 Catholic Church for three years; she considered faith to be an
9 important pillar in her life; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia's life was tragically cut short in
11 the events at Northern Illinois University on February 14,
12 2008; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Catalina Garcia will be remembered by all who knew
14 and loved her as an optimistic, loving, and energetic person
15 who brought joy to everyone around her; the light and love she
16 brought into the lives of everyone she knew will be remembered
17 forever; therefore, be it
 
18     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
19 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
20 her family and friends, the passing of Catalina Garcia; and be
21 it further

1     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the family of Catalina Garcia as an expression of
3 our sympathy.
