SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Charlotte Lewis of Peoria, who passed
4 away on September 17, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Charlotte Lewis was born on September 10, 1955 in
6 Chicago; her parents were Bobby Rufus Lewis Sr. and Louella
7 Henderson Lewis; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Charlotte Lewis held bachelor's degrees in Parks
9 and Recreation Administration and Commercial Sequence and
10 Program Management; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Charlotte Lewis was employed at the George
12 Washington Carver Community Center as a program director from
13 1996 until her passing; she worked at the Illinois River
14 Correctional Center in Canton from June 1993 to July 1997; she
15 was also employed at the Logan Correction Center in Lincoln;
16 she eventually became a Correction Residence Counselor I at the
17 Adult Transition Center in Peoria, working there from July 1997
18 until her passing; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Charlotte Lewis was an accomplished and talented
20 athlete; she was a valuable member of the 1976 United States
21 Olympic Team and was inducted into the Illinois State Athletics

1 Hall of Fame in 1983; she holds many honors, including the
2 Brazilian Championship Gold Medal from 1987 to 1990, the Silver
3 Medal of the Brazilian Championship in 1986, the Brazilian
4 Regionals Gold Medal from 1986 to 1989, the Silver Medal of the
5 Brazilian Regionals in 1986, the Brazilian Jogos Alberto Silver
6 Medal in 1986 and 1990, the Gold Medal of the Brazilian Jogos
7 Alberto from 1987 to 1989, the World University Games Team 1977
8 Silver Medal, a silver medal on the 1976 Olympic team, a gold
9 medal on the 1976 Pre-Olympic Team, a gold medal on the 1976
10 Pan American Team and the 1975 World Championship Team, and
11 state championships with Illinois State University from 1973 to
12 1978; she was also the WBL World Champion with the Nebraska
13 Wranglers during 1979 and 1980, with the Brazilian Imprensa
14 from 1987 to 1990, the French Championship during 1978 and
15 1979; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Charlotte Lewis was preceded in death by her
17 parents; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Charlotte Lewis is survived by her sisters, Rosa
19 Henderson, Barbara Lewis Moore, Janice Lewis, Annette Pannell,
20 Elizabeth Lewis, and Nora Lewis; her brothers, Bobby (Annette)
21 Lewis Jr. and Altton Lewis Jr.; a loving host of nieces,
22 nephews, great-nieces, and nephews; and her partner, Jamial
23 Ray; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
3 her family and friends, the passing of Charlotte Lewis; and be
4 it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to the family of Charlotte Lewis as an expression of
7 our sympathy.
