SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Albert Cassens of Corvallis, Montana,
4 formerly of Edwardsville, who passed away on June 12, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Albert Dietrich Cassens was the grandson of German
6 immigrants and grew up on a family farm in Hamel, hauling
7 vegetables during the Great Depression; he is remembered as a
8 Christian man who gave back to the community; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The Cassens family had interests in farm
10 machinery, automobile sales, and produce transport, but it was
11 moving vehicles that built the family business; early in the
12 business, Mr. Cassens took a bus from Hamel to Detroit with his
13 brother, Arnold, so they could drive Hudson-Essex cars back to
14 the showroom; the business settled in Edwardsville, focusing on
15 car sales, car insurance, and automobile hauling; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Today Cassens Transport Company is one of the most
17 successful family-owned transport businesses in the nation,
18 having hauled for Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, as well
19 as Toyota and Honda; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Mr. Cassens attended night school for eight years
21 at Washington University for accounting certification to help

1 in the family business; and
 
2     WHEREAS, For more than a decade, the Edwardsville Chamber
3 of Commerce has given an award named after Mr. Cassens for
4 outstanding community service; he served on the board of
5 directors and as chairman of the Bank of Edwardsville for more
6 than sixty years; Mr. Cassens donated time, money, and land for
7 everything from churches to parks to the local YMCA; Mr.
8 Cassens helped fund expansions and renovations of the
9 Edwardsville YMCA and donated land to the Edwardsville School
10 District; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Mr. Cassens was raised in the United Church of
12 Christ and was a member of First Baptist Church in Edwardsville
13 for many years; he was also a member of the Rotary Club for
14 more than 60 years, where he is remembered for not missing a
15 meeting for over 45 years; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Albert Cassens was preceded in death by his
17 brother, Arnold Cassens; his first wife, Helen Cassens; and his
18 daughter, JoAnn Shashek; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Albert Cassens is survived by his wife, Doris
20 Cassens; his daughter, Kay; his eight grandchildren and
21 fourteen great-grandchildren; and his dear friend, Robert
22 Plummer; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
3 his family and friends, the passing of Albert Cassens; and be
4 it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to the family of Albert Cassens as a symbol of our
7 sympathy.
