SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Charlotte M. Brown of Alton, who passed
4 away on January 4, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, She married Benjamin A. Brown on November 23,
6 1963; she was a proud graduate of Alton High School and
7 attended SIU-Alton to study business and nursing courses; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Charlotte Brown was active in many organizations,
9 including her family music group, the Jones Sisters Ensemble;
10 she was a member of the Alton Jubilee Mass Community Choir and
11 a former member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Charlotte Brown and her sister, the late Irma J.
13 Jones, organized a Federated Girls Club under the National
14 Association of Colored Women's Club (NACWC); the sisters and
15 other members later formed Tri Del Federated Club Women and the
16 Clovette Civic Girls Club; she served as supervisor of the
17 Clovettes for more than 40 years; as part of NACWC she served
18 in various offices at both regional and State levels, working
19 with young people to help improve their lives; and
 
20     WHEREAS, She was actively involved at Campbell Chapel and
21 later St. Paul AME St. Louis, serving in the young people's

1 department, steward board, Sunday School, choir, and other
2 auxiliaries; and she served as church secretary at Campbell
3 Chapel for a number of years; and
 
4     WHEREAS, She worked at the YWCA as a receptionist for many
5 years, at the Alton School Systems for 30 years, and as an
6 independent Mary Kay consultant for 27 years; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Charlotte Brown's life was one of service,
8 inspiration, strength, and beauty; she used her life to
9 positively touch the lives of countless young people and
10 friends; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Charlotte Brown was preceded in death by her
12 parents, Reverend Damon and Willie Ann Jones; her brother, the
13 Reverend Damon Jones; her sisters, Irma and Doris Jones; her
14 godson, Patrick Jones; and her nephews, Lawrence Gray and Gary
15 Saunders; and
 
16     WHEREAS, The memory of Charlotte Brown will be cherished by
17 her husband, Benjamin; her daughter, Sharla (Ky) Ajayi; her
18 granddaughters, Dayo and Sade Ajayi; her sisters, Reverend Jean
19 (Oscar) Gatewood and Janie Rainey; her brothers, Raymond
20 (Josie) Jones, Ronald Jones, and Joseph Jones; her sisters,
21 Waleen Jones, Joyce Jones, Gwen Barrett, and Willie Delores
22 (Linwood) Elliott; her nieces, nephews, cousins, close

1 friends, and club sisters; her godsons, Michael Gray, and
2 Delaney Seales; her goddaughter, Kametra Elliott; and her
3 special niece, Ranetta Jones; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
6 her family, friends, and all who knew her, the passing of
7 Charlotte Brown; and be it further
 
8     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9 presented to the family of Charlotte Brown as a symbol of our
10 deepest sympathy.
