HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Wind energy provides an emission-free energy
3 alternative and uses natural resources to generate electricity
4 and offset energy costs; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Illinois is ranked 16th among states for wind
6 energy potential and has the 7th highest amount of installed
7 wind energy capacity in the nation; and
 
8     WHEREAS, In Fiscal Year 2006, the Illinois Department of
9 Corrections was the second-highest ranking agency in terms of
10 energy building costs, spending more than $37 million; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Due to budget constraints, Illinois prisons are
12 understaffed and older prisons face threats of closure in order
13 to reign in spending; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Wind energy projects at prisons have shown
15 potential in other states; in Indiana, the Department of
16 Corrections installed a wind turbine at one prison that
17 generates 10 kilowatts an hour and saves about $2,280 a year;
18 therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1 urge the Illinois Department of Corrections to pursue a wind
2 generation pilot project at one of its correctional facilities
3 to offset energy costs; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
5 Director of Corrections Roger E. Walker, Jr.
