HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4th,
3 1961; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Barack Obama's mother instilled in him the
5 importance of empathy and compassion from a very young age and
6 these values shaped him to become the great man that he is
7 today; and
 
8     WHEREAS, After graduating from Columbia University in
9 1988, Barack Obama moved to Chicago, where his tireless work as
10 a community organizer helped to improve the lives of many
11 people living in impoverished neighborhoods; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Barack Obama earned his law degree from the
13 prestigious Harvard Law School in 1991 and proved himself to be
14 a leader and trailblazer even then by becoming the first
15 African-American to be president of the Harvard Law Review; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Barack Obama served in the Illinois Senate from
17 1997 to 2004, where he sponsored several key pieces of
18 legislation and worked in a bipartisan manner to accomplish the
19 business of the State while earning the respect and admiration
20 of his colleagues; and

1     WHEREAS, In July of 2004, Barack Obama established himself
2 as a rising star in the Democratic Party when he delivered a
3 rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Barack Obama was sworn into the United States
5 Senate on January 4, 2005 and took the lead on many significant
6 issues that will define America in the 21st century; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Barack Obama's commitment to public service and
8 "doing the people's work" is evident in both his personal and
9 professional life, as he continues to push for policies that
10 will strengthen America's working families; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Barack Obama announced his candidacy for
12 President of the United States, on Saturday, February 10, 2007,
13 from the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, and
14 also announced his choice for Vice President at the same
15 location in Springfield on August 23, 2008; and
 
16     WHEREAS, On November 4, 2008 Barack Obama became the first
17 African-American to be elected President of the United States;
18 that day will forever be remembered as a historic and
19 monumental day where Americans stood up together and said "YES
20 WE CAN!"; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Barack Obama is a devoted husband and father who

1 accepted the opportunity to allow his family to inspire others
2 to believe that change could begin with them; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Barack Obama is a living example of the American
4 dream and his resounding message of unity and hope will
5 continue to inspire all who hear it; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 congratulate President-elect Barack Obama on his victory and
9 wish him all the best in his future endeavors; and be it
10 further
 
11     RESOLVED, That we recognize that Barack Obama has made a
12 indelible mark on not only the State of Illinois, but on the
13 world; and that we honor Barack Obama for his hard work; and be
14 it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to President-elect Barack Obama as a symbol of our
17 esteem and respect.
