HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor the Puerto Rican Parade
4 Committee of Chicago for the outstanding work it has performed
5 for the Puerto Rican community in the City of Chicago for over
6 40 years; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The mission of La Casa Puertorriquena, which
8 translates to The Puerto Rican House, is to make the house a
9 home to Humboldt Park and other Latino communities in Chicago
10 and to establish the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago
11 as a voice for Puerto Ricans, instilling community empowerment,
12 and encouraging Puerto Ricans to positively represent and
13 preserve their cultural roots, not only in Chicago but
14 throughout the Midwest; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Beginning with the Puerto Rican Parade in 1965 and
16 rounding up with the six day long Fiestas Puertorriquenas, the
17 Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago has brought the Puerto
18 Rican presence to the forefront of Chicago through music,
19 dance, and food; more than cultural pride, these events began
20 and continue today to bring historical awareness, community
21 unity, and Latino empowerment to the Puerto Rican community;
22 and

1     WHEREAS, The Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago's
2 annual Fiestas Puertorriquenas festival was first implemented
3 in 1982; it is the second largest outdoor festival in Chicago;
4 the festival attracts over 1,500,000 potential customers; and
 
5     WHEREAS, On June 14, 2008, President Miguel "Mikey" Sanchez
6 and the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago will hold its
7 43nd Annual Puerto Rican Parade; the 27th Annual Fiestas
8 Puertorriquenas festival will be held from June 10-15, 2008;
9 therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 honor the Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago for its
13 continuing dedication and service to the Puerto Rican community
14 in Chicago and wish the committee continued success in its
15 future endeavors; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to Puerto Rican Parade Committee of Chicago President
18 Miguel Sanchez as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
