HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize the Danville Symphony
4 Orchestra on its 40th anniversary year; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Harry and Gail Adams conceived the idea that
6 Danville needed a symphony orchestra in 1967; Mary Miller,
7 President of Danville Junior College, was enlisted to support
8 the formation of the orchestra and to ensure that college
9 credit was received by the members for their participation; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The Danville Junior College Symphony Orchestra
11 made its debut in December of 1967; there were two concerts
12 that season with 53 players; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Danville Junior College provided rehearsal space,
14 music stands, a set of timpani, and a bassoon; by 1969
15 financial support was coming from the City of Danville, the
16 Music Performance Trust Fund of the American Federation of
17 Musicians, the Illinois Arts Council, the National Endowment
18 for the Arts, Danville Junior College, and generous local
19 donors; and
 
20     WHEREAS, The Danville Symphony Orchestra Board of
21 Directors was established in 1970; the Viennese Ball became an

1 annual fundraising event in 1971; and in 1972 the Symphony
2 Guild was established to support the Orchestra; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Volunteers provide an annual Young Artists
4 Competition each year and provide strong education programs in
5 the Danville area schools; and
 
6     WHEREAS, There are 60 members under the direction of
7 Maestro Jeremy Swerling and over 1,400 patrons that enjoy
8 performances each year; four regular season concerts, a
9 Children's concert, and an Arts in the Park concert are held
10 each year; therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13 congratulate Maestro Jeremy Swerling and the members of the
14 Danville Symphony Orchestra on reaching this milestone
15 anniversary; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to Maestro Jeremy Swerling as a symbol of our
18 respect.
