HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Crohn's disease is a chronic disorder that causes
3 inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal tract; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Crohn's disease and a related disease, ulcerative
5 colitis, are the two main disease categories that belong to a
6 larger group of illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease;
7 and
 
8     WHEREAS, Irritable bowel disease impacts 1.4 million
9 patients per year in the United States, at an annual cost of
10 approximately $2 billion per year; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Approximately 30,000 new cases of Irritable Bowel
12 Disease are diagnosed every year; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Irritable bowel disease is primarily a disease
14 affecting young people and those in the prime of their life;
15 and
 
16     WHEREAS, Children with inflammatory bowel disease miss
17 school activities and do not have the appropriate access to
18 restrooms during school hours; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Inflammatory bowel disease patients are at a high

1 risk of developing colorectal cancer; therefore, be it
 
2     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
4 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the date of April
5 11, 2008 as Crohn's and Irritable Bowel Disease Day in the
6 State of Illinois.
