HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The brave Americans who serve in the military of
3 the United States have responded swiftly and selflessly
4 whenever called upon to defend our nation and to preserve and
5 protect the founding principles of democracy and freedom; and
 
6     WHEREAS, These service members place the national interest
7 above their own, leaving behind family and friends to serve
8 their country; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The federal government has an obligation to
10 provide the benefits and care it has promised to Illinois
11 veterans; and
 
12     WHEREAS, In every military conflict and national time of
13 need since 1818, the brave men and women of this State have
14 risen to the cause of defending democracy; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Many instances of inadequate treatment and care of
16 returning service members and veterans at the United States
17 Department of Veterans Affairs' administration facilities have
18 been exposed recently; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Each service member and veteran has the right to
20 the best treatment and care; and

1     WHEREAS, This nation owes a great debt to its military
2 veterans, many of whom have served in the most remote and
3 volatile parts of the world at great sacrifice to themselves
4 and their families; and
 
5     WHEREAS, It is unacceptable that Illinois veterans who seek
6 treatment and care should be left behind by their government;
7 therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
10 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we encourage the United States
11 Department of Veterans Affairs and United States Department of
12 Defense to ensure that adequate care is provided to veterans
13 and returning service members; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That we encourage the Illinois congressional
15 delegation to pursue legislative or administrative remedies
16 needed to allow veterans or service members to utilize private
17 healthcare facilities, including hospitals, so that veterans
18 and service members may receive the care and rehabilitation
19 necessary to continue living their lives; and be it further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 delivered to the President of the United States, the Secretary
