    Amends the School Code. Allows school boards to award high school diplomas to honorably discharged veterans who served in the armed forces of the United States during the Vietnam Conflict.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
5 22-27 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/22-27)
7     Sec. 22-27. World War II, and Korean Conflict, and Vietnam
8 Conflict veterans; diplomas.
9     (a) Upon request, the school board of any district that
10 maintains grades 10 through 12 may award a diploma to any
11 honorably discharged veteran who:
12         (1) served in the armed forces of the United States
13     during World War II, or the Korean Conflict, or the Vietnam
14     Conflict;
15         (2) resided within an area currently within the
16     district;
17         (3) left high school before graduating in order to
18     serve in the armed forces of the United States; and
19         (4) has not received a high school diploma.
20     (b) The State Board of Education and the Department of
21 Veterans' Affairs may issue rules consistent with the
22 provisions of this Section that are necessary to implement this
23 Section.
