SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/34-18.37 new

    Amends the Chicago School District Article of the School Code. Provides that the Chicago Board of Education shall require that schools provide recess for all students in kindergarten through grade 8. Provides that recess must be at least 10 minutes in length. Provides that if the principal determines that the weather is inclement, the principal shall direct that a recess be held indoors. Requires the principal to ensure that students are given the opportunity to engage in physical exercise during each recess. Provides that the time required for recesses is included in the minimum number of hours necessary to constitute a full day of attendance under the State aid formula provisions.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
5 34-18.37 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/34-18.37 new)
7     Sec. 34-18.37. Recess required. The board shall require
8 that schools provide recess for all students in kindergarten
9 through grade 8. A recess must be at least 10 minutes in
10 length. If the principal determines that the weather is
11 inclement, the principal shall direct that a recess be held
12 indoors. The principal shall ensure that students are given the
13 opportunity to engage in physical exercise during each recess.
14 The time required for recesses by this Section is included in
15 the minimum number of hours necessary to constitute a full day
16 of attendance under Section 18-8.05 of this Code.
