SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 2805/20 new

    Amends the Department of Veterans Affairs Act. Creates the position of Advocate Outreach Officer to be appointed by the Director of the Department. Sets forth the duties of the position, including assisting veterans and their families in working with various federal, State, and local agencies and performing community outreach functions. Effective January 1, 2008.

1     AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Department of Veterans Affairs Act is
5 amended by adding Section 20 as follows:
 
6     (20 ILCS 2805/20 new)
7     Sec. 20. Advocate Outreach Officer. The position of
8 Advocate Outreach Officer is created as a full-time position
9 within the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Advocate
10 Outreach Officer shall be appointed by the Director of the
11 Department and shall serve at the pleasure of the Director. The
12 Advocate Outreach Officer shall have the following
13 responsibilities:
14         (1) assisting veterans and their families in working
15     with federal, State, and local agencies that administer
16     programs for veterans;
17         (2) assisting veterans in maximizing State and federal
18     benefits that may be available to them;
19         (3) streamlining the benefit application and awareness
20     process;
21         (4) coordinating community outreach to promote
22     veterans assistance programs;
23         (5) promoting the use of veterans advocates in the

1     State and serving as a link between veterans, veterans
2     advocates, and the Department; and
3         (6) improving outreach methods, programs, and
4     training.
 
5     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect January
6 1, 2008.
