SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-664   was 625 ILCS 5/3-806.4

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that, upon proper application, the Secretary of State shall issue registration plates designated as Gold Star license plates to any Illinois resident who is the surviving widow, widower, parent, or sibling of a person who served in the Armed Forces and lost his or her life while in service whether in peacetime or war, and that the surviving widow or widower and each surviving parent and sibling shall be issued one set of registration plates (rather than providing that only one set of the plates may be issued for each Gold Star awarded).

1     AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5 and renumbering Section 3-806.4 as follows:
 
6     (625 ILCS 5/3-664)  (was 625 ILCS 5/3-806.4)
7     Sec. 3-664 3-806.4. Gold Star license plates recipients.
8 Upon Commencing with the 1991 registration year and through the
9 2006 registration year, upon proper application, the Secretary
10 of State shall issue one pair of registration plates to any
11 Illinois resident, who as the surviving widow or widower, or in
12 the absence thereof, as the surviving parent, is awarded the
13 Gold Star by the United States in recognition of spouses or
14 children who served in the Armed Forces of the United States
15 and lost their lives while in service whether in peacetime or
16 war. Commencing with the 2007 registration year, upon proper
17 application, the Secretary of State shall issue one pair of
18 registration plates designated as Gold Star license plates to
19 any Illinois resident, who is as the surviving widow, widower,
20 or parent, or sibling of a person is awarded the Gold Star by
21 the United States in recognition of spouses or children who
22 served in the Armed Forces of the United States and lost his or

1 war. The If the parent no longer survives, the Secretary of
2 State shall issue the plates to a surviving sibling, of the
3 person who served in the Armed Forces, who is an Illinois
4 resident. No more than one set of plates shall be issued for
5 each Gold Star awarded, and only one surviving widow or widower
6 and each surviving parent and , or in the absence of a surviving
7 parent, only one surviving sibling shall be issued one a set of
8 registration plates, except for those surviving parents who, as
9 recipients of the Gold Star, have legally separated or
10 divorced, in which case each surviving parent shall be allowed
11 one set of registration plates. Registration plates issued
12 under this Section shall be for first division vehicles and
13 second division vehicles of 8,000 pounds or less. An Through
14 the 2006 registration year, an applicant shall be charged a $15
15 fee for the original issuance in addition to the appropriate
16 registration fee which shall be deposited into the Road Fund to
17 help defray the administrative processing costs. Beginning
18 with the 2007 registration year, an applicant shall be charged
19 only the appropriate registration fee.
