SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Don Hubert of Chicago, Illinois, who
4 passed away on November 27, 2006; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Don Hubert was raised in a Chicago family of seven
6 children; in a Chicago Lawyer magazine article, after being
7 named 1992 Person of the Year by the publication, Mr. Hubert
8 recounted how he would pick cotton with his grandmother, trying
9 to build his pile higher and higher onto the scale that would
10 determine how much he would be paid; and
 
11     WHEREAS, In grade school, he asked for a wagon for
12 Christmas so he could deliver groceries to earn money for
13 tuition at Hales Franciscan; he is credited with helping Hales
14 Franciscan High School keep its doors open by generously
15 donating the proceeds of his first big legal verdict to the
16 school; he has since led a capital campaign for Hales
17 Franciscan, persuading Michael Jordan to give $1 million to
18 kick off a $15 million fund-raising effort; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Mr. Hubert served as the second African-American
20 president of the Chicago Bar Association; he represented the
21 City of Chicago in a federal redistricting case; he won
22 acquittals for men falsely accused of murder; and raised his
23 now 12-year-old daughter Jessica on his own after his wife,
24 Mellonie, died; and
 
25     WHEREAS, He was considered among the top leaders in
26 Chicago's African-American community, and was frequently
27 sought after as an adviser and fund-raiser by African-American
28 politicians; he created a mentoring program through the Cook
29 County Bar Association to train new lawyers to avoid getting
30 into trouble; and

1     WHEREAS In 2005, Mr. Hubert was awarded the Chicago Bar
2 Association's John Paul Stevens award for his life's work; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Mr. Hubert attended Loyola University, where he
4 founded the African-American Student Organization, then went
5 to law school at the University of Michigan; he was head of the
6 Hubert Law Group, a six-lawyer firm that counts Coca-Cola and
7 McDonald's as their clients; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Don Hubert is survived by his daughter, Jessica;
9 his stepson, Brandon Harris; his parents, Issac and Louise
10 Hubert; his brothers, Issac, Karl, Jerome and Maurice; and his
11 sisters, Shirley Hubert-Thompson, and Janice Hubert-Whitten;
12 therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15 his family and friends, the passing of Don Hubert of Chicago;
16 and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of Don Hubert as a sign of our
19 condolences.
