SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 wish to express their sincere condolences to the family and
4 friends of Ruth Brody of Skokie, who passed away on Friday,
5 October 20, 2006; and
 
6     WHEREAS, She was born in 1938; she grew up in the
7 Mississippi Delta and took cosmetology classes in Memphis
8 before moving north, living in Gary for a while and eventually
9 settling in Lincoln Park; she met her future husband, Jack
10 Brody in the neighborhood market and the couple raised a family
11 in Skokie before divorcing in the mid-1980s; and
 
12     WHEREAS, She started working for Y-ME as a volunteer
13 following her breast cancer diagnosis in 1989, and was
14 virtually a full-time volunteer for the national offices
15 through the 1990s, serving as chairwoman of the group's fashion
16 show three times and its Mother's Day race twice; in 2000, she
17 helped launch the Illinois chapter of Y-ME and was executive
18 director of the organization's Illinois affiliate for the past
19 four years; she participated in all aspects of the group's
20 agenda, traveling to Washington, D.C., and Springfield to lobby
21 for funding, organizing fundraisers, and leading advocacy
22 efforts; and
 
23     WHEREAS, The passing of Ruth Brody has been deeply felt by
24 many, especially her spouse, Ken Suhanek; her daughters, Sue
25 (Harry) Van Cleve and Beth Brody (Lev Goldberg); her grandson,
26 Samuel Brody-Goldberg; and three siblings; therefore, be it
 
27     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
28 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
29 Ruth Brody, and we extend our sincere condolences to her
30 family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
31 further
