SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with sadness of the death of E. Richard Zitzman of
4 Bethalto on January 3, 2006; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Born on July 12, 1924, in St. Louis, Mr. Zitzman
6 was a son of Elmer W. Zitzman and Dolly Shearer-Gentry; he
7 married the former Betty M. Garns in June 1949; she preceded
8 him in death on January 4, 2001; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Mr. Zitzman valiantly served his country as a
10 member of the U.S. Navy during World War II; he served on the
11 USS Saturn in the Atlantic, where he participated in the supply
12 of arms to the port of Murmansk, Russia, and in General
13 Patton's invasion of Sicily, where he was a landing craft
14 operator; he was later transferred to the aircraft carrier USS
15 Suwannee and participated in most of the major Pacific Ocean
16 conflicts, including the battle of the Philippine Sea and the
17 Marianas Campaign; his last Navy adventure was participating in
18 the Bikini atomic weapons testing in 1946; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Mr. Zitzman was formerly employed at
20 McDonnell-Douglas as a machinist and was involved with the
21 Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo spacecraft; he retired in 1985
22 after 30 years of service; he was actively involved with the
23 Lewis and Clark Community College Ham Radio Club and was a
24 member of the Moro Presbyterian Church; and
 
25     WHEREAS, The passing of E. Richard Zitzman is felt by all
26 who knew and loved him, especially his sons and
27 daughters-in-law, Fred and Carolyn Tripp, Robert E. and Teresa
28 Tripp, Roger E. and Terry Tripp, and David and Sharon Zitzman;
29 his daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Ken Edelman, Sandra
30 Hangsleben, Patricia "Lynn" and Paul Laughlin, and Robin Mugge;
31 his 14 grandchildren; his many great-grandchildren; his many

1 great-great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Patricia Nooner
2 and Delores Doerr; and
 
3     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Mr. Zitzman was preceded
4 in death by his parents; his grandsons, Robert Pyle, Shawn
5 Tripp, and Jonathan Tripp; and his son-in-law, George E. Mugge;
6 therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
8 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9 E. Richard Zitzman and extend our sincerest condolences to his
10 family, friends, and community; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
13 sympathy.
