SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Gerald E. "Gene" Zimmerman
4 of Cottage Hills on October 5, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Gene Zimmerman was born on September 19, 1919 in
6 Nameoki Township to Edward H. and Bessie M. Ratley; he married
7 Mary Sue Smith on October 18, 1952 in Wood River; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Mr. Zimmerman graduated from Alton High School in
9 1937; he retired as manager of the Credit Bureau of Alton after
10 25 years of service; he was later employed by the First
11 National Bank of Wood River; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Mr. Zimmerman served his country honorably; he
13 served 45 months in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II and
14 28 months in the China-Burma-India Theatre of Operations; he
15 was discharged on December 9, 1945; he received the Good
16 Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II
17 Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with two Bronze
18 Stars; he later received the China War Memorial Medal issued by
19 the Chinese government to allied forces who served in either
20 China or Burma in appreciation for their efforts in freeing
21 China from the Japanese Empire during World War II; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Mr. Zimmerman was a lifetime member of Alton
23 Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1308, Alton American Legion Post
24 126, and the China-Burma-India Veterans Association; he was
25 past commander of the Alton American Legion and the St. Louis
26 Basha of the China-Burma-India Veterans Association; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Mr. Zimmerman was a dedicated community servant;
28 he was a well-known member of the Wood River Lions Club since
29 1963; he was a past president of the Wood River Lions Club and
30 received the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, the Lions of

1 Illinois Foundation Award, and the local G. O. DeAtley Award;
2 he was president of the Associated Credit Bureau of Illinois;
3 he was also a 50-year member of Whitelaw Avenue Baptist Church;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, The passing of Gerald E. "Gene" Zimmerman has been
6 deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Mary Sue; his
7 daughter and son-in-law, Karen R. and David Mallory; his son
8 and daughter-in-law, Kevin E. and Tina Zimmerman; his son David
9 K. Zimmerman; his adopted daughter, Megan Tooley; his
10 grandchildren, Brian, Kimberly, and Kelly Mallory and Kyle
11 Zimmerman; and his step-grandson, Ryan Thomas; and many other
12 relatives and friends; therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15 Gerald E. "Gene" Zimmerman, and we extend our sincere
16 condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
17 him; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
20 sympathy.
