SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with deep regret of the death of Mary Janette Holmes of
4 Springfield on Sunday, September 11, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mrs. Holmes was born on January 5, 1930, in
6 Springfield to Carl and Geraldine McGillick Kraus; she married
7 Charles R. Gillespie, and he preceded her in death in 1958; she
8 married Albert J. Holmes in September of 1961 in Petersburg;
9 and
 
10     WHEREAS, She attended Sacred Heart Grade School and was a
11 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy; she retired in 1990 from the
12 State of Illinois House of Representatives, where she had been
13 employed since 1970 as Chief Journal Clerk; she went on to
14 spend nearly a decade in the service of this Body, retiring as
15 the attendant of the Democratic Phone Room in 2003; and
 
16     WHEREAS, During her tenure in the State House, she saw many
17 lawmakers come and go and was an ever-present contributor to
18 the democratic process; she was well-known by coworkers,
19 legislators, lobbyists, reporters, and family and friends
20 alike for her devotion, her sense of style, leadership, and
21 compassion in the face of the long, grueling hours of Session;
22 and
 
23     WHEREAS, She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church,
24 where she volunteered in many areas throughout her life; she
25 was a member of St. Joseph Home Coterie (Gene Kraus Circle),
26 St. Louise de Marillac, St. Aloysius Catholic Women, St.
27 Aloysius Altar and Rosary Society, and Sacred Heart Academy
28 Alumni; and
 
29     WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Janette Holmes has been deeply
30 felt by many, especially her husband, Albert J. Holmes; her

1 sons, Rick Gillespie, Gary (wife, Jane) Gillespie, Tom
2 Gillespie, and Michael (wife, Ann) Holmes; her daughters,
3 Janette (husband, Gene) Drendel and Lynn (husband, David)
4 Chapman; her eleven grandchildren; her sisters, Freda Burg and
5 Kathy (husband, Steve) Williams; and several nieces, nephews,
6 and cousins; she was preceded in death by her first husband,
7 her parents, and her brother, Carl Kraus; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10 Mary Janette Holmes, and we extend our sincere condolences to
11 her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
12 further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to her family as an expression of our deepest
15 sympathy and in memory of the continuing example of selfless
16 service that was her life.
