SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of E. Lawrence "Larry" Young,
4 Jr., of Wheaton on Saturday, April 23, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Born in Oak Park, he moved to Glen Ellyn in 1931,
6 when his father started Young's Home Utilities, which sold
7 items ranging from boilers to records; after he graduated from
8 Glenbard West High School in 1946, he received a business
9 degree from Grinnell College in Iowa; he then enlisted in the
10 Air Force and served from 1951 to 1955 at Elmendorf Air Force
11 Base in Anchorage, Alaska; and
 
12     WHEREAS, When he returned, he joined the family business,
13 which was then known as Freeze-Rite Locker; the store also
14 provided butcher services and rented freezers; in 1966 the
15 store flooded and was reopened a year later as Young's
16 Appliances; in the late 1970s, his father left the business;
17 Mr. Young recently renovated the store to keep up with big
18 retailers; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Mr. Young was on the Glen Ellyn Village Board from
20 1978 to 1981 and started the process that brought cable
21 television and Lake Michigan water to the village; as he
22 watched local banks being swallowed up by larger firms in the
23 1980s, he developed a consortium of local investors to start
24 Center Bank in Glen Ellyn, which focused on the community
25 rather than the bottom line; and
 
26     WHEREAS, When Center Bank was bought by a larger bank, he
27 vowed to start again and, with most of the original investors,
28 formed Community Bank Wheaton/Glen Ellyn 10 years later with no
29 shareholder owning more than 5 percent; the goal was to bring
30 back relationship-oriented banking and involve the community;
31 Mr. Young saw the need for specialized service, and the bank

1 now has three branches, in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, and Winfield;
2 and
 
3     WHEREAS, The passing of E. Lawrence "Larry" Young, Jr., has
4 been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Virginia; his
5 daughters, Kathryn Krolopp, Laura Samuels, and Joyce Stewart;
6 his son, Doug; and his seven grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
8 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9 E. Lawrence "Larry" Young, Jr., and we extend our deepest
10 sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
11 him; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
14 sympathy.
