SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Al Scott on Thursday, March
4 3, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Scott, a 1965 graduate of Hirsch High School
6 and a 1969 graduate of Central State University in Ohio, played
7 for the Cincinnati Bengals for a short time; he was the
8 sixth-winningest football coach in Illinois high school
9 history, with a record of 262 wins and 130 losses; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He leaves a lasting mark on Public League
11 football, establishing his record in 33 seasons at Simeon High
12 School, where he coached from 1972 to 2004; he is the only
13 coach in Public League history to lead his team to the city
14 championship game in four decades; the Simeon Wolverines also
15 made four Prep Bowl appearances under his leadership; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Mr. Scott was one of the pioneers in bringing
17 respectability to Public League football, and he had the best
18 winning percentage in Public League history; in 2003, he
19 coached his team to a third Chicago Public School City
20 Championship; and
 
21     WHEREAS, He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
22 Inc., and throughout his career, he won a number of accolades,
23 including being named "Football Coach of the Week" by the
24 Chicago Bears in 1996, National High School Coach of the Year
25 for the Midwest Region in 1997, and he was inducted into the
26 Illinois Football Hall of Fame in 2001; during his career, he
27 coached three high school athletes who eventually played for
28 the NFL; they are John Mitchell, Bill Johnson, and Ivory McCoy;
29 and
 
30     WHEREAS, The passing of Al Scott has been deeply felt by

1 many, especially his wife, Lola; his son, Alvin Jr.; his
2 grandson, Alvin III; and his mother and stepfather, Margerie
3 and James Harbut; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6 Coach Al Scott, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his
7 family, friends, students, colleagues, and all who knew and
8 loved him; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to his family as an expression of our sincere
11 condolences.
