SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with sadness of the death of Rolla John Mottaz,
4 formerly of Alton, on February 3, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Mottaz was born March 8, 1908, in Hardin, to
6 John and Nellie (Bizaillion) Mottaz; he grew up and spent most
7 of his life in Alton; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He and the former Eunice Clevenger were married
9 June 28, 1930, in Alton; she passed away May 3, 1989; he
10 married Jean Hunter on July 27, 1990, in Tequesta, Florida; and
 
11     WHEREAS, He became Spencer T. Olin's executive assistant in
12 May 1930 at Olin Industries, later called Olin Mathieson
13 Chemical Corp. and the Olin Corp. in East Alton; he continued
14 to work for Olin in St. Louis and Florida for many years after
15 officially retiring from the corporation, serving as president
16 of the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation for more than 25
17 years; he resigned as trustee of the foundation in 2000, but
18 continued until 2004 as general manager of the Allapattah
19 Properties Partnership; and
 
20     WHEREAS, He often said the highlight of his achievements
21 with the Olin Foundation was the development of the Spencer T.
22 Olin Golf Course at Gordon Moore Park in Alton; he was a good
23 friend of Dr. Gordon Moore; and
 
24     WHEREAS, He studied business administration at the
25 University College of Washington University and completed the
26 advanced management program at Harvard Business School in 1954;
27 he was a member of the Harvard Club of St. Louis; and
 
28     WHEREAS, He was active in the Republican Party and in
29 fundraising on the local, state, and national level; he served

1 as chair of the Madison County Republican Central Committee and
2 as a central committeeman for the State; he was deputy finance
3 chairman of the National Citizens for Eisenhower Congressional
4 Committee in 1954 and deputy chairman of the Republican
5 National Finance Committee from 1958 until 1959; and
 
6     WHEREAS, During a long career of civic involvement, he
7 served on the boards of Alton Banking and Trust, Alton Memorial
8 Hospital, and the Alton Foundation; he chaired the Civic
9 Memorial Airport Authority, Community Chest drive, and the
10 Madison County Cancer Crusade; he served several terms as
11 president of the Piasa Bird Council of the Boy Scouts of
12 America and was honored with the Silver Beaver Award for
13 outstanding service to scouting; and
 
14     WHEREAS, A member of Franklin Masonic Lodge 25 in Alton and
15 Ainad Shrine Temple in East St. Louis, he was awarded the
16 DeMolay Legion of Honor; he was also a member of the Alton
17 Nature League, the First Presbyterian Church of Tequesta, the
18 Tequesta Country Club, and a charter member of the St. Louis
19 Club; he was a founding member of the Economic Council of
20 Martin County, Florida; and
 
21     WHEREAS, The passing of Rolla John Mottaz is felt by all
22 who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Jean; his sons and
23 their spouses, Ronald C. and Dorothy Mottaz and Steven N. and
24 Judith Mottaz; his grandchildren and their spouses, Vicky and
25 David Osborn, Mark (Ainette Martinez) Mottaz, Susan and Joseph
26 Leonard, Sara and Paul Lowery, Andrew (Helen Gramates) Mottaz,
27 and Elizabeth and S. Richard Cohen; and his
28 great-grandchildren, Heather Osborn, Kelly Osborn, Gabrielle
29 and Brianna Mottaz, Matthew, Bradley, Natalie, and Mackenzie
30 Leonard, Allison, Emily, and Caroline Lowery, Christopher and
31 Adam Cohen, and Zoe Mottaz; therefore, be it
 
32     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL

1 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2 Rolla John Mottaz and extend our sincerest condolences to his
3 family, friends, and community; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
6 sympathy.
