SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with sadness of the death of John Whiteside of Joliet
4 on January 22, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, John was born in Vienna and was a long-time Joliet
6 area resident; he graduated from Vienna High School, Joliet
7 Junior College, and Northern Illinois University; he was a U.S.
8 Air Force veteran and a featured columnist at the Joliet Herald
9 News; he started his career as a beat reporter at the newspaper
10 in 1971, quickly earning a reputation as an aggressive reporter
11 covering the crime beat and local government; he began writing
12 his popular column in 1981 and developed a loyal following over
13 the past 24 years; and
 
14     WHEREAS, He was recipient of many awards throughout his
15 outstanding newspaper career, including the 2001 Governor's
16 Hometown Award for his first place Taylor Pirc Police Video
17 Camera Project, the 1981 Illinois Journalist of the Year Award,
18 Will County Sheriff's Department 2004 Lifetime Achievement
19 Award, Joliet Area Historical Museum War Heroes Gallery named
20 in his honor, Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad
21 Certificate of Appreciation for support in establishing the
22 honor guard, and an Illinois House Resolution on November 19,
23 2004 honoring his long service to the Herald News and the
24 Joliet Community; and
 
25     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his father, Sherman
26 Whiteside; his beloved grandmother, Lula Whiteside; his Aunt
27 Mary Whiteside and Aunt Martha Koehler; and his loving
28 stepfather, Robert C. Hill; and
 
29     WHEREAS, The passing of John Whiteside is felt by all who
30 knew and loved him, especially his loving wife of 39 years,
31 Mary Jane (nee Wharton); his daughter, Shelley Ann Whiteside;

1 his mother, Jane Hill; his brothers, Jerry (Katrina) Whiteside
2 and Allan (Mary Ann) Hill; his sister, Sue (Dr. David) Ray; his
3 two step-sisters, Greta (Ed) Chitwood and Gloria (Homer) Baker;
4 and his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
7 John Whiteside and we extend our sincerest condolences to his
8 family, friends, and community; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
11 sympathy.
