SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On October 26, 2005, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,
3 President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, declared that
4 "Israel must be wiped off the map", described Israel as "a
5 disgraceful blot [on] the face of the Islamic world", and
6 declared that "[a]nybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the
7 fire of the Islamic nation's fury"; and
 
8     WHEREAS, President Ahmadinejad told reporters on December
9 8, 2005, at an Islamic conference in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, "Some
10 European countries insist on saying that Hitler killed millions
11 of innocent Jews in furnaces ... although we don't accept this
12 claim"; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Iran funds, trains, and openly supports terrorist
14 groups that are determined to destroy Israel; and
 
15     WHEREAS, On December 14, 2005, President Ahmadinejad said
16 live on Iranian television, "[T]hey have invented a myth that
17 Jews were massacred and place this above God, religions and the
18 prophets"; and
 
19     WHEREAS, The leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran,
20 beginning with its founder, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini,
21 have issued statements of hate against the United States,
22 Israel, and Jewish peoples; and
 
23     WHEREAS, An estimated six million Jews were killed in the
24 Nazi Holocaust; and
 
25     WHEREAS, The remarks of President Ahmadinejad have been
26 denounced around the world and condemned by, among others, the
27 political leaders of the United States, Arab nations, Israel,
28 Europe, and the United Nations; and

1     WHEREAS, The United Nations, in General Assembly
2 Resolution 181 (1947), recommended the adoption of the Plan of
3 Partition with Economic Union for Palestine, which called for
4 an independent Jewish State; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
7 CONCURRING HEREIN, that we, in adopting this resolution,
8 condemn the recent statement by Iranian President Mahmoud
9 Ahmadinejad that denied the occurrence of the Holocaust and
10 supported moving the State of Israel to Europe, support the
11 demand of the United States Congress for an official apology
12 for these damaging, anti-Semitic statements that ignore
13 history, human suffering, and the loss of life during the
14 Holocaust, and support the call of the United States Congress
15 for Iran to end its support for international terrorism and
16 join other Middle Eastern countries in seeking a successful
17 outcome of the Middle East peace process; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to
19 the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Iranian
20 Ambassador to the United States, the President of the United
21 States, the Speaker and Clerk of the United States House of
22 Representatives, the President Pro Tempore and Secretary of the
23 United States Senate, and the members of the Illinois
24 Congressional delegation.
