SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, American women of every race, class, and ethnic
3 background have made historic contributions to the growth and
4 strength of our Nation in countless recorded and unrecorded
5 ways; and
 
6     WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play a
7 critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of
8 the life of the Nation by constituting a significant portion of
9 the labor force working inside and outside of the home; and
 
10     WHEREAS, American women have played a unique role
11 throughout the history of the Nation by providing the majority
12 of the volunteer labor force of the Nation; and
 
13     WHEREAS, American women were particularly important in the
14 establishment of early charitable, philanthropic, and cultural
15 institutions in our Nation; and
 
16     WHEREAS, American women of every race, class, and ethnic
17 background served as early leaders in the forefront of every
18 major progressive social change movement; and
 
19     WHEREAS, American women have been leaders, not only in
20 securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity,
21 but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation
22 movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights
23 movement, and other movements, especially the peace movement,
24 which create a more fair and just society for all; and
 
25     WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of American
26 women in history has been consistently overlooked and
27 undervalued in the literature, teaching, and study of American
28 history; therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
3 CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate March as "Women's History
4 Month" and urge the Governor to issue a proclamation calling
5 upon the people of Illinois to observe March with appropriate
6 programs, ceremonies, and activities.
