SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
225 ILCS 60/20   from Ch. 111, par. 4400-20

    Amends the Medical Practice Act of 1987. Provides that the rules the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation must adopt concerning continuing education must include a requirement that each physician licensed to practice medicine in all its branches who practices pediatric, family, internal, or emergency medicine complete a course in recognizing child abuse and neglect. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning regulation.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Medical Practice Act of 1987 is amended by
5 changing Section 20 as follows:
 
6     (225 ILCS 60/20)  (from Ch. 111, par. 4400-20)
7     (Section scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2007)
8     Sec. 20. Continuing education. The Department shall
9 promulgate rules of continuing education for persons licensed
10 under this Act that require 150 hours of continuing education
11 per license renewal cycle. These rules shall be consistent with
12 requirements of relevant professional associations, speciality
13 societies, or boards. The rules must include a requirement that
14 each physician licensed to practice medicine in all its
15 branches who practices pediatric, family, internal, or
16 emergency medicine complete a course in recognizing child abuse
17 and neglect. The rules shall also address variances in part or
18 in whole for good cause, including but not limited to illness
19 or hardship. In establishing these rules, the Department shall
20 consider educational requirements for medical staffs,
21 requirements for specialty society board certification or for
22 continuing education requirements as a condition of membership
23 in societies representing the 2 categories of licensee under
24 this Act. These rules shall assure that licensees are given the
25 opportunity to participate in those programs sponsored by or
26 through their professional associations or hospitals which are
27 relevant to their practice. Each licensee is responsible for
28 maintaining records of completion of continuing education and
29 shall be prepared to produce the records when requested by the
30 Department.
