HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois were deeply saddened to learn of the death of
4 Alvin Joseph Baxter, Jr. of Chicago, on Thursday, August 3,
5 2006; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He was born on May 27, 1920, in Chicago to Lucille
7 and Alvin Joseph Baxter, Sr., originally of New Orleans,
8 Louisiana; he attended Tilden Technical High School and then
9 worked for the Federal Government until being drafted into the
10 US Army in September of 1942; he attained the rank of Master
11 Sergeant and was honorably discharged in December of 1945; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He attended Catholic University in Washington,
13 D.C. and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1949;
14 he returned to Chicago and began working for the Cook County
15 Welfare Department where he met his future wife; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He was united in marriage on April 29, 1950, to
17 the former Doris Morgan in Dayton, Ohio; and
 
18     WHEREAS, He built a successful career in government service
19 where he designed and implemented programs for impoverished
20 communities; he worked for the Office of Economic Opportunity,
21 which later became the Community Services Agency, eventually
22 retiring from the position of Branch Manager for the Midwestern
23 Region; and
 
24     WHEREAS, He retired in 1982 and took part in several
25 hobbies including picture framing, gardening and volunteer
26 work; dedicated to his community he demonstrated his commitment
27 through active participation in organizations such as the Hyde
28 Park-Kenwood Community Conference, the Blue Gargoyle, and
29 Friends of the Park; he also gave freely of his time and energy
30 to support the goals of the 25th District and the Office of

1 State Representative Barbara Flynn Currie; and
 
2     WHEREAS, He and Doris traveled extensively visiting parts
3 of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean; his greatest joy in
4 retirement was being involved with his granddaughter, Morgan,
5 and his grandsons, Jordan and Justin; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The passing of Alvin Joseph Baxter, Jr. has been
7 deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Doris; his daughters,
8 Patrice Marie Baxter (Don) Walker and Camille Ann Baxter
9 (James) Bruce; his grandchildren, Morgan Leigh Walker, Jordan
10 James Bruce, and Justin Dalton Bruce; and a host of family and
11 friends; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 we mourn the passing of Alvin Joseph Baxter, Jr., and we extend
15 our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who
16 knew and loved him; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
19 sympathy.
